I am just destined
To hang from your orbit
Like an intricate insect
Waiting to be allowed into the light
Of your harlequin eyes
Just a lurker in darkness
Just a fiend searching for freedom
Just a demon after succulent tubular mastication
Just a fuckwit after kicks
Just a deadweight getting junk sick
Just a demon on the make
With a pile of drugs to take
And it’s all just an illusion within an illusion
Just another mirror game of echoes
As I pant and strain beneath you
With your sphinx silent smile
And forget my real name
Trying not to feel insane

abstract

Frenzy my dances of sexual excitement
Desperate glances in harlequin bars
Scoring the grain of the marrow of living
Strife torn between hell and houses of lout
Mollusc enthusiasm for disparate causes
Tremendous doings and beings of bone
Chop up mojumbo and pack me a cone
Purple my pants down from eating air
Never complacency never confusion
Always extruding mutated illusion
Plasticine being the stuff of our insect
I saw you breathing between tie-dyed seconds
I caught you laughing in pelican phrases
I felt what you contemplated by the train tracks
Knew you were happening coped with conversion
Bent your cacophony inside a moonbeam
I was the one who grocked all your cadenzas
I was the one to rachet your mind-meld
I was the one who believed you were real
I was the one who embraced how you feel

Swagman_(2715952698)

I was walking alone through red dirt in the vast Kimberley region of Western Australia
The sun beat down on me as if softening me up for death with a meat hammer
I was so thirsty that my tongue was beginning to stick to the top of my mouth
I was worried as I had not seen a road for ages, and was wandering in spirals
Suddenly he stepped out from behind a eucalyptus tree
He wore a long coat despite the heat, and various mugs and tools were tied to the coat
On his head a battered old hat
And his eyes were like burning blue coals
He smiled and said ‘Don’t be afraid- what are you doing out here?’
I told him I was lost and thirsty
He said- “I’ll show you how to find water’.
“You just look for a good tree then dig to the roots’
He dug down about 2 feet with a little spade he pulled out of a pocket in his coat
And there was water—we both drank
Then he grabbed a few rocks and set up a fireplace
He said- ‘Leave these rocks here for the next bloke, that’s the Swagman’s code’
He gathered together some twigs and rubbed two sticks together to start the fire
He tried to show me how to do it, but I couldn’t work out the trick
‘I didn’t like the city, so when I was eighteen I left for the bush, and I’ve been wandering around here for near fifty years’ he said
‘I’ll never regret it, the bush is in my blood’
‘The blackfellas taught me how to survive, amazing people- they’ve been doing this for fifty thousand years’
‘Some fellas come out here and have no idea because they don’t learn from the blackfellas. Those fellas die.’
He told me how to get back to the road then disappeared behind a tree.
Once again there was silence with an insect buzz
A real Swagman.

Sometimes the worst feeling is no feeling at all
Five days past sad
Staring at walls
Struck numb and dumb by the awfulness of it all
A desperate infinite fall
Empty of all passion
Far from compassion
Reamed out shell like an insect exoskeleton
Full of nothing
Void of love
Vegetable man
Hollow, hollow
Without purpose
Dead inside and desolate
No meaning can be formed from a mass of contradictory sensations
No drive or energy
Like a fucked up old shell of a car
Can’t get out of bed
And when a friend asks how I’m doing
I stare into the vast panoply of human suffering
And can only answer
‘I don’t know’
